Sweet potato is a highly nutritious vegetable and demand for sweet potato chips has been strong ever since they were introduced to the Australian market. David is confident that the result is set to be the new market front-runner. “It was always our goal to use Australian sweet potato rather than imported product because we saw that as an important point of difference. Having delivered that, along with a superior coating and fantastic colour and taste makes this a real winner. We’ve gone with a 10mm Ultrafast cut which delivers the best of both worlds – it offers really good yield along with the flavour intensity of a thicker chip. At the same time you get a quick cook time, good temperature retention and the right amount of sweet potato to ensure well-rounded flavour.”

The added benefit that Edgell Sweet Potato Chips boast over competitor product is their superior hold – thanks to Simplot’s quality delivery style batter, developed using the latest technology to ensure it’s the best batter available to the market today.

“It’s based on the same batter we’ve used for our new Delivery Potato Chip which we say is ‘crunchy to the last bite’ and for which we’ve attained a 40 minute hold during the delivery window,” David says. “As sweet potato contains more moisture to start with than regular potato, the hold time is necessarily lower, but we still wanted to make it as high as we could. Our Sweet Potato Chips deliver exceptional hold time and certainly rival every other sweet potato chip on the market.”

The challenge for the team at Simplot was to make a potato chip as thin-cut as possible while further enhanced by their world famous Supa Crunch coating for ultimate taste, crunch and hold - and David says they’ve come up with a winner. “They’re ultra-thin, which makes for an exceptional presentation and unique eating appearance, and the way they cook up gives them the texture and mouthfeel almost of a hot potato crisp.”

Edgell Crispy Flats taste great too - “With any coated chip the coating to potato ratio is what delivers the flavour, and these certainly deliver on flavour.” And, David adds, they’ve been designed with versatility in mind: “You could really serve them anywhere across the market, and certainly whenever you’re looking for good plate coverage these will fit the bill. They’re wide and light, and they’ll really shine on the pub and club menu, but they’ll work in a myriad of applications.

“One of the interesting things about the format is because they are so thin they don’t necessarily have to be served piping hot - you can cook them off and let them sit under the lamp for a while and serve them as a crispy side, because they’re almost like a warm crisp. You can also stack them to load up meals, for example as a burger build, as part of a club sandwich, or anywhere you want some crunch in the middle of your dish. While the justly famous Supa Crunch coating delivers great flavour, you can also add your own bespoke spice mix to create a signature chip, or perhaps put a zigzag of mayonnaise or sour cream over the top just prior to serving to add a distinctive touch to the presentation.
