Foodservice Suppliers Association Australia Joins End Food Waste Australia in the Fight Against Food Waste

Foodservice Suppliers Association Australia (FSAA) has officially joined End Food Waste Australia as a signatory to the Australian Food Pact. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in the collective effort to reduce food waste in Australia.

The latest signatory to the initiative, FSAA joins the ranks of organisations such as Compass Group and Oz Harvest in the Australian Food Pact, a multiyear commitment aimed at addressing and mitigating food waste on a large scale. The pact fosters collaboration and facilitates the development and sharing of innovative food waste solutions tailored to the Australian market.

Led by End Food Waste Australia, tasked with leading the delivery of Australia’s National Food Waste Strategy and supported by the Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, the Australian Food Pact is aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which aims to halve global food waste by 2030.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, 35 per cent of food produced for human consumption in Australia goes to waste. This amounts to an enormous $36.6 billion annually and contributes to approximately three per cent of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The impact of food waste extends beyond economic losses, affecting food security and exacerbating environmental challenges. With rising food prices made worse by factors such as food inflation and global warming, a growing number of Australians face food insecurity with Foodbank Australia stating one in six Australians go hungry regularly.

FSAA, alongside other stakeholders committed to the Australian Food Pact, is dedicated to addressing these challenges by working towards the goal of halving Australia’s food waste by 2030.
